Think Brilliant

Here's something I think is cool, it's an infographic about infographics.

It talks about the different ways that infographics represent ideas and grab your attention. It's pretty much humorous, but also enlightening as someone who could potentially be working on infographics someday.

It was made by the people at www.thinkbrilliant.com. Their "about us" states:

Think Brilliant Media Studios was founded in August of 2007.We started out providing design and development services, though quickly grew to begin developing our own in-house products and applications. Along the way we’ve partnered with some of the best people in the business and established wonderful and beneficial relationships with industry heavyweights.

My favorite part of their website is the "news/entries" tab. This is where the infographics graphic came from. Aside from just that graphic, sometimes they talk about projects that they're working on, sometimes about other things related to the world we live in. I think the reason that I like what they're doing is that they aren't trying to please anyone. Their page says, "Nothing gets sugar coated. If we have an opinion, we share it. If you think what we’re saying is too controversial, or it makes you uncomfortable, don’t read it." That way, they can talk about literally whatever they want to talk about!

Here's an article from their website that I think we should all read before we enter the workforce. It is actually about ways to 'structure your company for happy employees', but I think by reading it I have a better idea of what I should look for in a workplace. In a time when it's hard to find work (especially PAYING work) many people are happy to get a job, any job, but I still think it's important to make sure that not only would you be a good fit for the company, but the company would be a good fit for YOU. It's an interesting read for us as entry level designers, and good to keep in mind if we ever get to the point of running our own businesses!

  1. This pic is cool. I think their statement is powerful because it's so honest. I think the 6 points in that article are also very true. When working with a team, it's important that everyone has equal weight when it comes to ideas and decisions. Teams are most effective when people like each other (I know from experience on this one!) and when the members feel like they are being listened to. As a student manager, I work with 4-5 people at a time and I try to listen to their input when it comes to setups. Almost everyone in the work place will be forced to work with others, so to have an open attitude and fair policy makes the work easy and fun.

  3. I felt that their statement was very powerful and honest also. I have always wanted to work by myself, but as I continue to work on projects, such as logos, I feel it would be easier to work with a team in order to design a solid logo.

  4. That infographic about infographics is fantastic. I'm saving that to my hard drive. I love self-referential/self-aware things like that. I think that article applies to any collaborative endeavor, and not just in a workspace environment.

  5. You don't hear about many companies who are so straight-forward with their beliefs, but it definitely makes them stand out. After reading the article, it makes me feel better that companies are continually trying to better their workplace and their employees even in these rough times.

  6. I like the article. As a person who will try and maintain working relationships with my college peers, I find that sticking by rules such as these are crucial to the success of all parties.

  10. I agree with Lauren and Tony on this one, but while I was reading it I felt like it is just something that already makes sense and that everyone should know. Funny how things don't really work out that way

  11. I don't have much experience working with info graphics but I would like to try to do something with them at some point in my career.

  12. It's definitely a challenge for me to work on a team because I'm a really independent worker but as we learned in preschool, working well with others an important skill to have. It's also always helpful to have input and motivation from other designers.

I'd love to make an infographic too...it's a challenge as well, to display a lot of sometimes heavy information in a readable, organized way.

  14. Nice infographic. Although I definitely agree with the potential dangers they can pose through the 'oversimplification' of complex data.
