The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy

Over the weekend I was drawing trying to get some things finished and I popped in one of my favorite stories, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, originally written by Douglas Adams as a novel and adapted as a film. Now before I get lost rambling about the ingenious and absolute brilliance of this film/book let me get on track regarding the design aspect of the film.

The film is based almost entirely in space, that is a space inhabited by other life forms and creatures with new rules and new things for the common Earthman to learn about. This is where The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and the design aspect of the film come into place. Now when The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy begins to explain anything some savvy narrator pops on with a beautiful vector animation that explains the complexities of the galaxy, according the Douglas Adams.

Also, the navigation of the DVD also carries this animation through it, as if it were apart of the guide itself. The bright beautiful colors teamed up with clean lines and playful animation that really give the movie a feel of its own and carries the cheekiness of the original book.

I have attached some clips below that are clips from the film. Note that without the context of the rest of the movie these quotes might not make any sense or even anger you. Since this story is about how life began and exists there are many “puns” about religion and God, I apologies if they offend you, try to just look at the visuals.

  2. They are completely Tony. I agree.

And that is a great movie. Don't apologize for taking things out of context and having them possibly anger somebody. How can you make art if you're trying to make everyone happy?

  4. I like that the graphics have a more mid-century, modern feel that fits within the context of our world than something really flashy and "outerspacey."
