Cut & Paste

Trailer

John Fiorelli Interview for PressPausePlay

First, I think that we all should be aware (if you are not already) of this new documentary coming out soon! PressPausePlay is a film compilation of interviews discussing "the digital revolution of the last decade [that] has unleashed creativity and talent of people in an unprecedented way, unleashing unlimited creative opportunities." And asks the question: "But does democratized culture mean better art, film, music and literature or is true talent instead flooded and drowned in the vast digital ocean of mass culture? Is it cultural democracy or mediocrity?" See PressPausePlay website.

What really interested me when finding the movie, was this interview with John Fiorelli about Cut & Paste and seemed more appropriate for the blog. I had no idea that there was a "live digital design battle" in existence and it strikes me with the thought of what is our current design evolution? We have previously discussed the incorporation of our process for capstone to be somehow included in our final gallery presentation and I think that Cut & Paste is if anything, reinforces the idea. Fiorelli very eloquently discusses the importance of process and the unseen art of design that people do not really consider when looking at our final work. I know everyone has heard that person who questions our existence, who has a mac and the software and claims equal capability in doing our job. But, but these events really reinforces and legitimizes our existence with in the world/society. And I think that these events are extremely important in raising awareness for our field and creating a new appreciation for designers, most of whom are "unseen." Fiorelli wonderfully says that Cut & Paste should be a "catalyst for positive change," and I find myself drawn to their mission statement, to be a "social arena for the discovery, advocacy, and elevation of design." This video in contrast to the trailer for PressPausePlay gives me a very positive affirmation for the future of design and reinforces the fact that there are people actually out there trying to redefine our industry (positively) in ways we have yet to think of.

  1. I think it would be very interesting to see Cut & Paste's Digital Design Tournament that is held every year.

  2. The idea of a design battle existing is really cool, it reminds me of the I.T. battle in the facebook movie when they were trying to get a job. I love the modern day design world.

  3. I saw this show a while back about process art in painting, but then again thats just painting.
The process work in graphic design may be a little difficult to show. When you think of every element involved like photography, use of programs, research, typography etc.

  4. I think this is spurred in part by reality TV's impact on our culture, too - AIGA Chicago is hosting an Iron Sketch event, where designers can sketch competitively. It strikes me as a fun, engaging way to blow off creative steam and get some recognition outside of portfolio/resume pushing.

  5. I would love to see this documentary. It's crazy in thinking about how the video said everyone is an artist (writer, photographer, etc.) In a way this makes me feel that the artist profession is not really valued either. If ANY one can do it, what sets us apart from someone who didn't go to school? Not that you have to go to school to be an artist (esp when a lot of the greats didn't), but at times it makes me feel that our jobs have even less security than a lawyer or a doctor.

On another note I do think it's cool that they have these competitions, I wish I could see one.
