Alejandro Salazar

This is piece by an artist, Alejandro Salazar, that is one of many being featured on this website, http://www.orangepiel.com/go/ I really like the concept behind this website because it takes working artists and provides a space to create products for the home other than just painting or posters. One example that I tested out was putting the image above onto a lamp shade. Just one more example of how artists and designers can put their artwork into function. A designer might not have the ability to create lamb shades or shower curtains from their work, they might not want to, but someone out their might love their design hanging as their shower curtain. It is a market that this company, Orange Piel utilizes and I think it is awesome. Not only are they making money by selling household products, they help artists get noticed and put their work out there in a way that the designer/artist might not have before. Another way that the art community works together to help out each other make it in the field. To comment on the artist, I love his design style. The use of photography, illustration, and digital manipulation to create a collage style piece is very appealing to me. I feel he creates very interesting compositions by creating interesting and dynamic spaces.

  1. This is a really neat concept, it would be really neat to design your own customized household items like shower curtains and what not.
Another site that is sort of similar to this is razzle.com
here you can design your own buttons, (think busy beaver button co.), gym shoes, coffee mugs, etc.

  5. That's a pretty neat idea, re-appropriating art to be useful in other ways!

  6. Nice! I'm afraid if I started designing my stuff, I'd be redesigning it every year.

  7. I really like this surreal feel which is weird because I don't usually like that style. I think it's the way she combined the different mediums you talked about, but in a subtle understated way.

  8. This reminds me of a project I designed in high school, when I painted on a lamp shade. It had a domino theme and the base consisted of actual dominos.

  12. I would also want this work in my house, especially since it seems to dwell in surrealism and and I LOVE SURREALISM. I think that all the mediums used to create this goes to show we can move past just the computer.
