Kidsmodern

In my research for my senior project, in which i want to explore the experience of Design in children as well as adults, I found this great website that is devoted to designing materials exclusively for kids. At kidsmodern parents can go online and buy products and materials which are accompanied by portraits of young artists and designers, as well as stories surrounding the design classics of the twentieth century. Their products range from strollers and room furniture, to special crafted toys to meet children's needs/wants. They even have specially branded materials (which I actually never seen or heard of, but wish I had). Even though parents say that they know best for their children, what if that is not the case all the time. Adults see thngs differently than children; the mind of a child is full of color and imagination. it is great that Kidsmodern can tap into the mind of a child and produce things that kids would love to play with and explore!

By the way, I think that there web page design is incredible; it's very playful and fun to look at. it is a great way to provide a place for kids and their parents to explore new things together.

  1. This strikes me as very Scandinavian in concept. I was looking into studying in Sweden before I changed my concentration in the art program. They have a Design MFA at Gothenburg University that specializes in Child Culture.

    Part of the program description:
"The aim of the specialisation is to give you advanced knowledge about creative processes and the possibility of forming your own clearly defined attitude to the subject of design. You will simultaneously be provided with specialist qualifications for focusing on children’s perspectives. On children’s and young people’s participation and influence in society. On children’s play, learning, development, culture and health, and above all on the tools of play."

  3. Great idea. This is a wonderful way of creating some really inspiring environments for children. The only issue I could foresee is most likely the price. I didnt find any prices on the site, and typically this type of stuff ends up being geared toward very wealthy families. This would be great if they could make inexpensive pieces too!

  4. I also think this is a cool idea, and I especially like how the table sort of mimics a tire swing where the kids' legs would hang down in the hole.

  5. The site is very interactive and playful. I like your concept a lot. I like how each design has a story behind its intent.

  6. Really nice idea! Though I also share Shanna's reservations about how this sort of progressively-minded design is usually high-priced and marketed towards rich families, instead of towards less fortunate families who could probably use this sort of encouragement a little more.

  7. Like Lauren said, looks Scandinavian, which means I'd love it. I love the design aesthetic of their furniture.

  8. I know a couple kids who would like to buy everything on that website.

I really like what you said about "Even though parents say that they know best for their children, what if that is not the case all the time. Adults see things differently than children; the mind of a child is full of color and imagination."

It's so true. Kids can turn anything and everything into a game, and adults sometimes just don't get it.

  9. This is really cool! Looks like the concepts were designed by adults who are still kids at heart because I too agree that kids see things differently than adults.

  10. That's a clever idea, making furniture especially designed for a child's mindset. You are right in that kids see things differently than adults and it's nice to know that there is a company that understands and caters to that fact.

  11. There are times when I feel like a designer/artist mind is very similar to that of a child in the sense that imagination and creativity is thriving.

  12. Super cute! I wonder if these pieces of furniture can aide a child in learning to walk or movement etc.

  14. I agree with Aaron, kids do love unique, modern-looking designs! Companies just need to continue to come up with ways to persuade the parents to buy the furniture and other products.

  15. That is really neat! And it exposes children to different concepts.

  16. I like the website too! A little chaotic, but maybe that's the point-as that's how kids are too!

  18. That is a cool idea- I love the notebooks: "I am going to be a princess and this is my plan" or "I am going to change the world and this is my plan"

  19. i am not sure if i like the actual design of the site. the aesthetics remind me of a hipster's online clothing shop--not that there's anything wrong with hipsters :D it's just that i imagine a site for kid's modern furniture to be more polished and with more vibrant colors.

their furniture, on the other hand, seems very playful and sleek. if i ever have kids, i would love to buy them this type of furniture!

  20. This is a really cool website! Parents do see thngs differently than children and i think that these designers are truly trying to create furniture that children can enjoy and want rather than what their parents want as furniture.
