Design and Sports

I think it is pretty safe to say that the majority of us enjoy sports whether it be sports that we watch on TV, the Olympics or our inner athletes coming out of us.

We remember the sports we played while growing up through high school and even some of us in college. DePaul offers a number of ways for students to get involved athletically. Students can be DePaul athletes by playing a number of sports they offer or they can go the club and intramural sport route. Either way students love sports.

The FIFA World Cup recently happened in 2010 and many students from DePaul as well as colleges around the U.S. tuned in to root for their favorite Country. With an event so big comes great design and a need for it. I feel that the FIFA World Cup brought together a wide range of cultures from all over the world.

Many designers jumped on the band wagon as well and designed for the games. From t-shirts, to posters, to websites, the games brought culture together and design which made me feel that it connects to the question presented for this class.

In the link pasted below is a list of great websites designed for the FIFA World Cup.

  1. Jene--I think that creating designs for a organization such as FIFA would be a very challenging and fun project. Considering how many people in so many different countries would be viewing it, it would be challenging to consider such a large audience in terms of what symbolism to include, if any. Cool idea.

  2. As I non-sport person I will take your lead on this. I looked at the link and do think some of those sites are a bit too busy for my, but some very nice colors going on in some of them.

  3. Shanna has a good point, but it since it is so popular, even if just recently in the US, it could be fun.

  4. I'm not a sports enthusiast either, but it sounds like it could be an interesting topic to explore.

  5. Designing for sports seems very challenging because you have to grab the attention of fans, while not distracting players during a game, match, etc; I can see why if you enjoyed sports this would be a very fun and intriguing project while being quite challenging.

  6. Designing for a sports team would definitely be a challenge, especially for a team that would be in the Olympics. Coming up with a brand that can represent the goal of the team as well the country's ideals simultaneously without offending other cultures would be very hard as my other classmates elaborated on, but the finished product would definitely be interesting to see.

  7. I like the idea you presented in class about the Olympics. I went to the event in Daley plaza when they were announcing the winning city, and it was amazing how many people were there and what wide variety of signs, posters, t-shirts, and everything else they were wearing! I think it might be an interesting topic to explore - how design in sports can bring people together.

  8. I am totally not a sports person at all (though I used to play soccer and basketball in grammar school), but at the same time I'm a little intrigued by the culture and fandom that has sprung up around the activity (or activities, rather). Some of the sites seem a little overwhelming with their visuals (Sky Sports World Cup 2010 is one example; the players on the side detract from the center point of the website, with all of the info), but I'm not sure if that's because, as a non-sports person, I bring a different set of expectations to the table. I like the way the background was handled for the Football Fanhouse entry -- it provides texture, but because it's greyed out a bit, it's not as overwhelming.

  9. I love soccer and definitely followed the FIFA World cup. I wish it was once a year as opposed to every four years. I went and got the Vuvuzela! I agree with what everyone has had to say in regards to having to design a country. That design will be seen by the world and to capture their essence is hard. Many countries already have set design standards as they have the team jerseys, so most designers have some guidance. However, they still have the challenge of designing advertisements and ads.

The world of sports is definitely influenced by the design as teams have logos and colors and those designs have to inspire people and help them feel proud of their team.

  10. I have been involved in sports and a huge fan of many sports since I was a little kid. I think it would be awesome to design anything for a sports team. What is really exciting about designing for a sports team, lets say I create a logo for the team and they put it on a flag or a promotional item that is a giveaway before a game, at this point it is just more than a design. It becomes a way for fans to get involved or rally under.

  11. I think your idea is a key component that really supports that fact that designs really are everywhere in society. Branding and logo plays a huge role in this situation to me, and the way these things can be marketed is really vast!

  12. I personally don't pay much attention to sports but my sister and boyfriend are all about it so I have an idea of what your trying to get at, I think it will be a great project.

  13. Those websites featured were downright slick. When I think of sports design, I generally think of way too crowded Sports Illustrated spreads and chunky lettering on everything, but I guess that's an unfounded stereotype.

  14. ok those are awesome websites, I think that as Jenna said, designing for sports is extremely difficult. There is an entire culture backed by two colors or a logo that needs to be considered. (Cubs vs Sox) What if team design changes? The Diamondbacks changed their team design (from ugly to even more ugly in my opinion) and fans were furious. The power of the team is with the fans and their loyalty to the brand.

  16. Another aspect of design in sports is the apparel. In fact, I might argue that a team's uniforms are more important that a logo, simply because everyone is wearing it!

  17. There are a lot of great websites on the link you posted. It seems like you are very interested in this topic and I think it would be a great idea for you to do something similar for your project.

  18. I don't know how much I can speak for the rest of the students of DePaul but I loved waking at 9am everyday to watch soccer in the world cup along with all of the animation and the colors that are inspired from the nation of South Africa. I wish I just had some of the skills i have now back then, and I too would have hopped on the band wagon.
