hit RECord

As I had mentioned in class, my goal for this senior capstone project is to create a social media site for artists, musicians, writers, and film-makers.  I first came up with the idea last fall quarter, in my Art + Design II class with Zack.  I knew I had wanted to design a site that would make people feel inspired and connected with others through art.  Some of you in my class had recommended checking out Joseph-Gordon Levitt's (Inception, 500 Days of Summer) site http://hitrecord.org/  For those who aren't familiar, Hit RECord allows for artists of all mediums to use there talents to collaborate on projects, which are curated by Joseph-Gordon Levitt himself.  Some artworks become full-fledged productions that make their way to festivals, such as Sundance.

I want to build on this idea of collaboration, while giving artists the opportunity to showcase themselves on their page--anything from daily online journals, to video clips of working guitar riffs.  The site is essentially a blank canvas.  The idea of a blank canvas has always been something that appealed to me, because it allows the artist to be as creative as possible, while giving him or her the opportunity to inspire others.

  1. The site seems like a great idea. I hope that your site has as much success or even more than Hitrecord. Can not wait to see how you put together your site.

  5. I agree, this is a great idea. I feel like artists really appreciate when there are places where they can showcase their work and interact with other artists who understand and can relate to them. I'm excited to see how it turns out.

  10. James, I really wish you the best of luck with this project! I can't even imagine how much goes into the development of a social networking site, but I know it's a LOT! If you ever get stressed, just remember that we're all behind you on this.

  11. I have no doubt that this website that you are in the process of creating will be a great source for artists, are you going to be gearing the site towards the entire nation or just specifically Chicago?? Once the site is up and running creating small flyers and distributing them through out the city can be a great way to get other artists outside of DePaul community to participate!

  15. Your project is good and you should feel good. :D /unhelpful comment is unhelpful

I do agree that you should hit up Levitt about this project and see what he thinks. He's traveled this road already, so you might as well ask him for advice on how to avoid or at least deal with roadblocks and potholes.

  20. I love your idea I often find myself asking non art people for their opinion only to find that their response is usually thats nice or I don't get it. Your site will aid many people especially when we get out of school and are looking for that critique.
