While I was looking through the blog Stickers & Stuff I came across these posters created by David Klein. David Klein was an incredibly illustrator who is most well known for his vintage travel posters. There are a couple of posters that stuck out to me. They were made for The Heights Players, a Brookyln community theater. Klein designed plenty of wonderful posters for Broadway shows as well.
When looking at these posters they have a unifying style about them. The graphics and color schemes are engaging and playful. The color that he uses throughout the poster catch your eye without being overpowering. He mainly works with 2 to 3 colors on a poster and I think that is key to having a poster look clean and not so crowded and overwhelming. I also think his use of illustration is adorable because it is not very detailed but still manages to attract the viewers attention. The woman at the bottom of the Cinderella poster is looking directly at the viewer and drawing your eye into the poster. The text and images work nicely together and don’t compete with one another. The lettering of On the Town is similar to Saul Bass style block letters.
Very cool! Definitely Saul Bass like.
ReplyDeletei "enjoy" how the colors really pop on the first poster. the blue and red work together in a pretty interesting way.
ReplyDeleteDavid Klein's Original Travel Art is very interesting to look at also.

I think it's interesting how each one chooses to use two color variations in similar ways. Very cool!
ReplyDeleteI love these posters. His style is really interesting and appealing. These remind me of the opening credits for Catch Me If You Can and the illustrations of the two main characters chasing after each other.
ReplyDeleteI love retro stuff, and the restrained color palette is well executed.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is the Cinderella one. Very interesting visual inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI like how playful the typography is in the 1st and last one.
ReplyDeleteI love the typography too. I think that this is awesome and inspiring.
ReplyDeleteThe drawing style reminds me a bit of Eloise, a bit of School House Rock.
ReplyDeleteReally great images in this one. I am a great fan of 60's inspired design
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of the middle poster. I like how the organic shape of the woman's hat breaks up what could have been a boringly symmetrical poster.
