So while doing research for my presentation I came across this artist, Sara Blake, whose work I think could have a big influence on my final project. She illustrates and then takes her drawings and edits them in Photoshop to give them a little bit more finesse . But her drawings are overall simple but at the same time they are so expressive, she has serious skill between her pen and paper. They are realistic because she seems to like to draw a main distinguishable object, yet they have an abstract quality at the same time because the object is never fully completed or it appears to be in the unknown area. You know what the subject is, but the subject seems to sit in this neutral space that really allows the mood and goal of her piece to come across to the viewer.
Her use of color is what really attracted me to her work initially. She plays with color to highlight and/or minimize certain aspects of her paintings to give them importance, energy or to tell a story and that is the overall goal of my final piece. I want to play on the different energies of color to get my point across. I feel like she really knows how to incorporate color and subject through illustration and editing to portray her pieces aim and I just love her overall style.
Her use of color reminds me a bit of an artist named Ed Paschke, who was a Chicago artist. He actually worked with oil on linen for most of his works. Here is the website if you want to look at his work. www.edpaschke.com/
ReplyDeleteI feel that her lack of detail in certain areas of this particular work aide the overall effectiveness of the piece. Her style definitely seems like vector art due to the lack of details as well. Since the work is actually hand rendered once it is examined closely those elements actually help to create more mystery and depth which is more compelling to me in the long run! Very beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with the above. Her choice of what details are shown vs the shapes give you the idea of what should be there but add mystery. And, the jer choice to use the blues and greens gives me a very calm feeling, its beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAmazing use of color. It reminds of Edvard Munch or egon schiele.
ReplyDeleteMan, I wish I could illustrate like that. That's damn gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI also love her style, and it is something that I've recently been trying to do with my drawings. Thanks for posting this!
ReplyDeleteI love it as well! I used to be huge in just illustrating. I moved to the computer knowing it would help me more in my career. Then I feel in love with illustrating on the computer. Finding a way to incorporate digital and hand drawn is awesome. Her lines look very similar to my earlier hand drawn illustrations in a way sense that we both use thin and thick lines to display depth.
ReplyDeleteI agree Sheri, Sara Blake's work would serve as good inspiration for your project in this class. The colors and the subject matter that she uses expresses a certain mood. Very effective!
ReplyDeleteThis is really beautiful. I love the incorporation of the abstract with the representational and the vibrant colors against more muted tones.
ReplyDeleteThis and your examples from the class presentation are both very beautiful. I look forward to seeing your final project!
ReplyDeleteCombining hand drawn art and digital art (Photoshop) is such a cool thing and it gives Sara Blake's work a unique and interesting look. Love the color used!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! I wish I could do something like that.
ReplyDeletegorgeous use of coloring- I am really excited to see how your project is coming along. This is a type of design that I would never think to do and has a great sense of attitude that I don't think could be conveyed any other way. The lines and depth are amazing, I am always attracted to the unintentional elements watercolors create (which is what I think it looks like).
ReplyDeleteWow! This work is really amazing.
