An interesting series of paintings that I came across by an artist who goes simply by "Dorothy". These paintings showcase the graphic elements of well-known logos stripped of the text. I am able to recognize the majority of the logos, however some were more easily recognizable than others. Without the text, I find that I focus more on the logo and the simplicity behind them. In all of these examples it seems that the text plays a big part in the logo as all of the designs are simple geometric shapes.
Although this particular topic is not what I am focusing on for the final project, it is still interesting to see the logos and how blank they seem without the words and fonts that make them come to life. It would be interesting to do a study where something small is altered about a well-known logo to see how drastic the overall tone or reorganization of the logo changes. Are you able to recognize the logos without their text? Do you feel that the images are stronger with or without the text??
I think I recognize all of those... except for the sunflower looking one. What is that?
ReplyDeleteAlso, check it! http://www.sporcle.com/games/corplogos2.php
The sunflower stump me as well.
ReplyDeleteThis is something that I wish I thought of for the capstone project. Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to look at these logos and see how much of the meaning is taken away by the lack of text. I have played the sporcle logo quiz...its a lot of fun to see how many you can get!
ReplyDeleteThese are cool! It just goes to show how easily we can recognize certain brands because of their constant presence in our lives!
ReplyDeleteThese are great. I love that they're paintings too.
ReplyDeleteNo clue what the first two are.
ReplyDeleteI like these!
ReplyDeleteSpoiler alert! Here's the yellow sunflower-ish one:

I really wanted to figure it out!
woah....chupa chups?!? never heard of it...the 2nd one definitely had me stumped, but im pretty sure the first one is burger king!
ReplyDeleteThese are funny! Even though I have seen this all my life pretty much, I am having some trouble figuring out what some of them are! It just shows you how important text and imagery is in design and communication.
ReplyDeleteThis idea might be useful as kind of a litmus test about the sticking power and potential of recognizability of any given logo design. I don't think it would be applicable across the board, nor do I think that a logo that fails this best is automatically a bad logo, but it's something to keep in mind.
ReplyDeleteThe Chupa Chups stumped me as well! I guess I don't see that logo as much as the others!! Fun post!
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of a photographer, who i can't find for the life of me online right now, who would take simple interesting photos of the streets and buildings then would remove all the text that would be present for billboards and shop fronts. I found the photography interesting because it was a text-less world implying no communication besides images. I feel that this is doing the same thing on a more micro level and even going as far as forcing us to try to connect with them even though there is nothing there to connect with. Hands down, awesome post.
ReplyDeleteI think if you can recognize a logo out of context and without text, then it is a successful and well designed logo.
ReplyDeletethis is a very strong project that they did. it most definitely shows the strength of the design without the text.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Jenna said. Also, this does go to show that we are bombarded with a lot of advertisement that it is drilled into our heads.
ReplyDeleteThe sunflower got me too. It is interesting to see firsthand the way logo's unconsciously make an impression on our brain!
ReplyDeletetaking away the text really highlights the simplicity of most of these logos. this reminds me when starbucks removed the text from their logo. obviously, people are still able to identify the brand.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see them without text because they are still very recognizable.
ReplyDeleteI love brain teasers like this, it reminds me of those who can read a word as long as the first and last letters stay the same. Our brain immediately fills in the blank and we are so familiar with the images its as though we dont even need the information anymore.
